Klein stresses Wind River has a three-pronged approach to the mobile and embedded Linux sectors: The Open Handset Alliance's Android work, LiMo and Intel's Linux-based Moblin strategy, which, he stresses, is coming on strong.

"Our role has been, and will now be even more pertinently, to commercialize Moblin, make sure it gets into real devices and that it has lots of application support behind it via third party developers. We demonstrated how this can be achieved at the recent Intel Developers Forum with an MID (Mobile Internet Device) where we had a significant input into the prototype product's graphics and interface capabilities."

Klein added he is slightly disappointed at the pace of progress in adoption of LiMo based phones, despite the recent breakthrough at Vodafone, but excited by the commitment of Intel to the Linux OS and supporting multiple versions of the open source OS as a means to play in the whole embedded Linux segment as this migrates into other end user sectors such as set-top boxes, automotive and even aerospace and defense.
