TSMC, UMC see mixed sales in August

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- There are mixed signals in the foundry business for August.

Surprisingly, TSMC was down. UMC was up.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) said net sales were approximately NT$28.89 billion ($882.6 million) in August, a decrease of 4.6 percent from July 2009 and a decrease of 6.8 percent from August 2008.

Revenues for January through August 2009 totaled NT$168.72 billion ($5.2 billion), a decrease of 27.5 percent compared to the same period in 2008.

Rival United Microelectronics Corp. said net sales were approximately NT$9.1 billion ($278.5 million) in August, up 2.85 percent from July 2009 and up 10.98 percent from August 2008.
