SAN JOSE, Calif. — The U.S. Department of Commerce has been flooded by nearly 2,200 applications requesting nearly $28 billion in stimulus funding for proposed broadband projects, nearly seven times the amount of money available, according to a report in today's Business Journal.

The economic stimulus bill provides about $7.2 billion to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service. About $2.4 billion from RUS and up to $1.6 billion from NTIA is available in this first grant round of grants and loans announced in early July.

Separately, Apple has landed a deal to sell iPhones into China through service provider China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. in a three-year deal, as reported in the Wall Street Journal.

China Unicom said sales will begin in the fourth quarter. In its latest financial results, the company said it has 3G service trials in 268 cities and will expand coverage to 335 cities. China gave out 3G licenses earlier this year, fueling a rapid network build out.
