SAN JOSE, Calif. — MIPS Technologies took three small steps forward Wednesday (August 26) on its journey to bring the Google Android operating system to consumer electronics devices.

MIPS and Sigma Designs demonstrated an Android-based system displaying 1080 progressive video on a flat screen display at the Digitimes Tech Forum in Taipei. Earlier this summer, the companies signaled their intension to scale Android to high def resolutions for use in systems such as set-top boxes.

In addition, design company AllGo Systems showed at the Taipei event a home media player based on Android running on a MIPS-based chip from RMI Corp. The prototype integrated Android's media framework with its own media codecs.

Separately, chip designer ALi Corp. of Taiwan announced it has joined the Mips' program to get early access to the Android port. Ali joins existing MIPS/Android partners Sigma and RMI.
