SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Ethernet Alliance will host a one-day forum in Silicon Valley on the changes coming with the 40 and 100 Gbit/second versions of the standard now in the works. The group has put out a call for papers for the September 15 event in Santa Clara, Calif.

The IEEE P802.3ba standard defining the 40/100 Gbit data rates is set to be ratified in June, 2010. "The scope of the project is very large and introduces a number of physical layer specifications for each rate," said John D'Ambrosia, who chairs the standards effort and is program chair for the event.

The group is looking for papers on a wide range of topics including the uses for 40/100G Ethernet in carrier and data center networks, use in system backplanes and associated work in protocols and media. The event also aims to address the needs at the new data rates for Energy Efficient Ethernet, a separate IEEE 802.3az standard.

The event is open to all comers whether or not they are members of the Ethernet Alliance. It hopes to draw a broad range of engineers, IT users and venture capitalists. Those interested in submitting a proposal for a paper can email organizers at ETF@ethernetalliance.org.
