WASHINGTON — The Energy Department will fund six university research projects aimed at improving the efficiency of internal combustion engines.

DoE said Monday (May 4) that funding for the R&D projects, which also focus on reducing engine emissions, will total up to $13 million. Funding beyond fiscal 2009 is subject to annual congressional appropriations to the Energy Department.

At least 20 percent of the cost of the projects will be shared by the universities.

DoE said research projects conducted under the University Advanced Combustion and Emissions Control program will seek to improve fuel economy for "light-duty" vehicles up to 40 percent. The program also seeks to boost brake thermal efficiency in heavy-duty engines to 55 percent.

The program also will focus on low-temperature combustion research and lean-burn approaches. Emission research will focus on advanced modeling and control of vehicles emissions.

Universities and their research projects include:

  • University of Connecticut: Three-dimensional composite nanostructures for nitrogen oxide emission control.

  • Michigan Tech: Diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction models.

  • University of Michigan: High-pressure lean combustion research.

  • Michigan State University: Closed-loop combustion engines.

  • University of Houston: Coupled nitrogen oxide storage and reduction.

  • University of Wisconsin: Advanced combustion technologies.

DoE's Advanced Vehicles Program seeks to develop new vehicle technologies that can leverage renewable energy sources while reducing demand for foreign oil..
