SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. plans to cut more costs.

AMD (Sunnyvale, Calif.) now estimates that it will record restructuring expenses of approximately $50 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2009. On Dec. 29, the company said that further cost reduction actions would result in additional charges in the first half of fiscal 2009, but it did not elaborate.

In a filing, AMD outlined the charges. ''Of this amount, approximately $23 million is related to severance and costs related to the continuation of certain employee benefits, approximately $13 million is related to contract or program termination costs, approximately $7 million is related to asset impairments and approximately $7 million is related to exit costs for facility site consolidations and closures,'' according to a filing.

''Of this amount, approximately $45 million will result in cash expenditures in fiscal 2009. Further cost reduction actions will result in additional charges during the remainder of fiscal 2009 and beyond, which the company cannot estimate at this time, but which the company expects will consist of facility site consolidations or closures,'' according to a filing.

Troubled AMD has seen its share of cost cuts in recent times. In January, AMD said it plans to cut an additional 900 jobs during the first quarter of 2009 as part of a series of moves designed to reduce the chip maker's workforce by about 9 percent.

At the time, AMD said it would shed another 200 jobs through a combination of attrition and the previously announced divestiture of its handheld business, the company said.

AMD had two major rounds of layoffs in 2008. Late last year, AMD reduced its workforce by about 600 employees. Last July, it announced the layoff of 10 percent of its workers.

More recently, AMD said that its shareholders voted to approve the proposed spinout of its manufacturing operations into a separate foundry company. AMD is now a fabless design house, which will reduce costs.

In the fourth quarter of 2008, AMD reported a net loss of $1.424 billion, or minus $2.34 per share. This compares to a loss of $127 million, or minus $0.21 a share, a year ago, and a deficit of $1.772 billion, or minus $3.06, in the previous period.

AMD reported fourth quarter 2008 revenue from continuing operations of $1.162 billion. Fourth quarter 2008 revenue decreased 35 percent compared to the third quarter of 2008 and 33 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2007.
