It acquired Internet-solutions provider BBN Corp., bought part of a nationwide fiber-optic-based backbone network from Qwest Communications Corp. and allied with Cisco Systems Inc. to develop enhanced data and Internet services.Thursday May 8, 1997Humble Intel vows to assess reported bug end of weekAs the Intel road show to launch the Pentium II rolled round the world it stopped off in London, Tuesday, with promises to look into the reported floating-point exception/overflow bug as a matter of urgency. The Pentium II is Intel's latest high-entry processor, which combines the upgraded architecture of the Pentium Pro with the extra multimedia instructions of the Pentium MMX.
IC methods yield extrusion processA research team at the University of Notre Dame has found an extrusion process that can be performed at micron scales, potentially widening the range of options available to micromechanical-systems designers.
Altera program targets reconfigurable computingSeeking "real progress" in what it calls programmable hardware, Altera Corp. will give selected researchers experimenting with reconfigurable computing a free board that speeds "switchover" times between configurations. The ARC-PCI board houses 100,000 reconfigurable gates with 16 Mbytes of local memory for standard 33-MHz PCI bus hosts. It's available after Altera accepts a written proposal describing its intended use.
Repeater chips debut from Cypress, LucentCypress Semiconductor Corp. and Lucent Technologies Inc.'s Microelectronics Group are launching repeater chips for Ethernet/Fast Ethernet applications that combine the high density of Media Access Control (MAC) logic with interfaces for physical-layer ICs.
Ariel to offer high-density access to NT serversAriel Corp. has developed a turnkey remote-access solution that combines a high-density 56-kilobit-per-second modem pool with digital and analog line interfaces for the ISA bus and Windows NT remote access software.
Portable data-acquisition/switch instrument rollsHewlett-Packard has developed a data-acquisition/switch instrument that integrates a compact mainframe, 20 input channels, a leading digital multimeter (DMM) and appropriate software for $1,685.
Wednesday May 7, 1997Intel rolls out Pentium II in Asia firstIntel Corp. launched itself back into the CPU race on May 6, when it formally introduced the Pentium II in Taipei, Taiwan. But the event was rather anticlimactic, since the details of the new chip were already widely known. The introduction was also marred by the almost simultaneous announcement on the Internet of a possible floating-point-calculation problem inherent in the Pentium II.
Intel tinkers with boot-block flashIntel Corp. has brought to market a version of its boot-block flash-memory family intended for smaller embedded applications.
Genetic-algorithm tool tackles range of problemsResearchers here at the University of East Anglia have released a genetic algorithm (GA) development tool, called Gameter, which can help solve a wide range of industrial, commercial and military problems.
Multifunction data-acquisition board allows PCI bus masteringData Translation says its DT3010 PCI-based, multifunction data-acquisition board costs less than competing boards of lower functionality.

Xilinx calls 4000E-1 its fastest 5-V FPGAXilinx Inc. has released a successor to the XC4000E-2 FPGA called the XC4000E-1. It is the fastest 5-V FPGA available from Xilinx.
Tuesday May 6, 1997Tools promise tiered service over the InternetA startup here is developing network-management software that could offer a departure from the universal, non-discriminatory service of today's Internet and intranets. Class Data Systems is assembling a package that would help relieve the congestion on Internet Protocol (IP)-based networks by giving Internet service providers (ISP) the ability to offer tiered services.
Cadence moves Verilog to NT in major EDA shiftIn one of the strongest endorsements yet of Windows NT in the high-end EDA marketplace, Cadence Design Systems Inc. has announced that its most popular software products, the Verilog-XL and Verilog-XL Turbo simulators, are moving to NT platforms. Previously available only under Unix, the tools are used for ASIC design worldwide and claim more than 20,000 seats.
