MPEG group forges Net multimedia spec

The Moving Picture Experts Group is forging a new object-oriented standard for encoding graphics-rich Web pages, online games and virtual-reality scenes. Called MPEG-4 SNHC, the spec jettisons today's model of video clips residing in on-screen windows in favor of 'visual objects" tagged with individual audio channels.

Web world tuning Java, HTML for TV

Expecting television-based Internet access to swell the population of Net surfers, information-appliance vendors and software developers are separately working on Java subsets and Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) extensions that would make Web content for the TV platform look, sound and function more like standard television fare.

Lucent demos wireless ATM local network

Researchers at Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs have demonstrated delivery of Internet access and MPEG-2 video to mobile computers at 10 Mbits/second on a wireless network. High-speed wireless local-area networks interconnected with asynchronous-transfer-mode (ATM) switches give the portable units the ability to send and receive high-speed data, voice and video.

Japanese put FED work on display

Three Japanese manufacturers have offered a peek at the field-emission-display technologies brewing in their R&D labs. With several other companies poised to commercialize product, the ramp in FED activity hints at competition down the road for Europe's PixTech Inc., currently the only company to have FEDs in general sampling.
