ADS to launch file-sharing system for 'net neighbors'

SAN FRANCISCO - Applied Data Systems (ADS; Columbia, Md.) will tout its networking capabilities at the Embedded Systems Conference. Along with connectivity solutions developer Visuality Systems Ltd. (Yokneam Ilit, Israel), ADS will launch a "network neighborhood" file-sharing system. The developer of embedded RISC systems also plans to demonstrate 802.11 wireless connectivity between two of its StrongARM platforms: Graphics Client Plus and the ADS Bitsy.

The network neighborhood system, to be shown on Graphics Client Plus running Microsoft Windows CE, uses VisualityNQ networking software to provide embedded network identification with file access, sharing and easy-to-use control capabilities. According to ADS, such features had previously been available only on large, CPU-based systems.

The technology was developed to meet demand for smart, networked devices in small, low-cost embedded packages. Potential markets include MP3 players, cell phones and thermostats. The network neighborhood system is expected to be ready in the third quarter for client-to-client access across multiple operating systems as well as across ADS' product line. Pricing will be about $10 per unit.

ADS previously developed 802.11 wireless Internet access capability on a custom basis but is now launching it as a standard feature in all of its products, with Microsoft Windows CE drivers.
