BANGALORE, India — Tata Elxsi, based here, has launched an embedded operating system, RoS-ES (Real Time Operating System for Embedded Systems), and said TranSwitch Corp. is its first customer.

Aimed at the growing number of applications for embedded processors, RoS-ES is available on ARM and Xtensa/Tensilica platforms targeting network equipment, consumer electronic and automotive markets. The company claims RoS-ES has a small memory footprint along with an array of capabilities.

TranSwitch Corp. (Shelton, Conn.), which supplies broadband access solutions for the consumer, enterprise and service provider markets, has licensed RoS-ES OS for its Atlanta 2000 family of communications processors.

Bill McDonald, director of CPE product marketing at TranSwitch, said the fact that Tata Elxsi was familiar with Tensilica's processors "was an important consideration in making our choice."

Tata Elxsi's business model includes royalty-free software, support and product design and engineering services, said Ram Mohan, head of its IP sales and business development unit.
