Google poaches Apple exec

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--Seemingly putting to rest any rumored “no poaching” agreement between Silicon Valley’s tech giants, Google has hired away a senior Apple director for work on a secret project.

According to VentureBeat, Google hired Simon Prakash, senior director of product integrity, and an Apple staffer for over eight years, to work on a project purportedly being headed by Google co-founder Sergey Brin himself. Before his employment at Apple, Prakash was director of engineering design validation at Cielo Communications and prior to that, a reliability and field applications manager at 3Com.

Though it isn’t known what Prakash will be working on at Google, his previous experience was in quality control for all Apple products, raising speculation that he may be destined to oversee any Google hardware projects currently in the works. Last year, Google bought Motorola Mobility, prompting rumors that the firm would start building its own hardware.

The move is especially interesting in light of a recent investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice into claims that Pixar, Lucasfilm, Intel, Apple, Google and Intuit were parties to a secret deal meant to prevent the poaching of each other’s employees. Such a deal would be considered anticompetitive and illegal.

I think it is not easy to really stop poaching from competitors. It is very natural for talents to move around. One thing that is encouraging is that Google really is serious on building hardware. I still believe a good software should work with a good hardware and the software should know the hardware well enough. Building the hardware by itself is the best way!

I agree about the hardware/software argument, Terry. To really do good software, you need to have a really good understanding of the hardware. This is what Apple has always done best, and if Google is catching on to it... well, that's just smart, common sense.

I am not sure building their own hardware is such a great idea. They need a strategic hardware partner, yes, but turning into an IDM like Apple means the end of Android as an open platform. This is a departure from their core business model which is very risky IMO.

Well Apple executed the IDM model very well. I dont see why Google cant do it. NOrmally the problems come, when IDM release too many models, in a short period of time. I think with Apple's success everyone is releasing less and less device models.

This may not be good decision. Google can develop its own talent and it is not difficult.

Why do these companies need to get into an agreement. Does it prevent people like simon to move to the other companies?

Exactly. That's the crux of the issue. They are NOT legally permitted to get into such an agreement. One of the best articles on this topic ("monopolistic competition") was published in the Feb. issue of Harper's Magazine. Check it out.

I don't agree with the naysayers who think Google should not (or cannot) do hardware. If they are serious about it, they can do harware as well as anyone else.

I also don't see anything wrong with bringing in expertise from outside to help important projects. This is Silicon Valley! This sort of thing happens all the time.
