Qualcomm (San Diego) announced it is also sampling its first chipsets for dual-carrier HSPA+ and multi-mode 3G/LTE, and said it is working with mobile software providers to optimize their solutions for the next generation of its Brew mobile platform.
The smartphone chipset family, dubbed MSM7x30, supports high-definition video recording and playback, has dedicated 2D and 3D graphics cores and is optimized for Web usage, Qualcomm said. The first devices based on the MSM7x30 family of chipsets are expected to launch commercially before the end of 2010, the company said.
The MSM7x30 family, which includes the MSM7230 chipset for HSPA+ networks and MSM7630 chipset with multi-mode HSPA+/EV-DO Rev. B and SV-DO support, features the same Scorpion CPU found in Qualcomm's Snapdragon QSD8x50 chipset, Qualcomm said.
The 7x30 family uses an 800 MHz to 1 GHz custom superscalar CPU based on the ARM v7 instruction set, Qualcomm said, supporting features such as 720p high-definition video encode/decode at 30 frames per second, integrated 2D and 3D graphics GPUs with support for OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenVG 1.1 APIs, dedicated low-power audio subsystem supporting 5.1 surround and12-megapixel camera and package-on-package memory support. The chipsets also feature integrated GPS and support for mobile operating systems including Android, Windows Mobile, Brew and Symbian , Qualcomm said.

What about the power consumption? Higher Clock speeds lead to more heat and disipation. Laptops went dual core years ago to better manage power consumption

Qualcomm's snapdragon is an arm based architecture with just 500mW of active power. x86 based atom from Intel burns close to 2W of active power. No cooling fans needed for Qualcomm smartbook. With such low power you can use the smartbook for up to 8-10hrs of multimedia use without needing a battery charge & weeks of standby time . The next gen snapdragon chip with performance up to 1.5GHz uses dual processor architecture.
