SAN FRANCISCO — The investment arm of Intel Corp. has invested an undisclosed amount in privately held EDA startup Silicon Navigator Corp., the companies said Monday (April 2).

The investment from Intel Capital was made to further mutual goals of expanding the scope and usage of OpenAccess-based products, the companies said. Silicon Navigator (Cupertino, Calif.) provides EDA tools based natively on the Open Source, OpenAccess database.

Silicon Navigator said it would use the investment to further develop its products, including its Rocket Design Environment programmable framework. Additionally, the companies will work together to extend OpenAccess solutions to meet next-generation design and EDA needs, they said.

"Silicon Navigator's relationship with Intel is representative of a new class of standards-based alliances between EDA companies and integrated device manufacturers," said Silicon Navigator CEO George Janac. "EDA suppliers can now provide tools and services based on the OpenAccess database versus proprietary databases. The two companies have been involved in OpenAccess for many years, and we share a common goal of enabling and developing open EDA components based on plug-in architectures."
