MANHASSET, N.Y. — Agilent Technologies Inc. and Lumileds Lighting announced they would collaborate on developing a series of mid-power light emitting diodes that would expand the product lines of both companies.

The LEDs, targeting the automotive, mobile phone, and lighting markets, will fall roughly in the 200-milliwatt to 1-watt range. Presently, Lumileds, San Jose, offers LEDs rated 1 watt and higher, while Agilent, Palo Alto, Calif., offers devices under 200 milliwatts, according to an Agilent spokesman.

Under the agreement, Agilent will provide design, development, and system integration expertise, while Lumileds will contribute its IP expertise and LED chips.

The new LEDs are expected to compete with products from Cree, Nichia, and Osram, the Agilent spokesman said.

The first products from the collaboration are slated to become available the fourth quarter of 2004. They will be sold by Agilent and distributed by Future Electronics.
