SUNNYVALE, Calif. Michael Tiemann, cofounder of Cygnus Solutions, has been named chief technical officer of Red Hat Inc. (Durham, N.C.), distributor of Linux software.
Red Hat acquired Cygnus in a deal that closed Jan. 10, but had yet to define the roles of Tiemann and of Cygnus chief executive officer Alex Daly. Red Hat announced Wednesday (Jan. 12) that Tiemann will take the company's CTO spot.
Meanwhile, Red Hat cofounder Marc Ewing will step aside as the company's CTO. He will continue to sit on Red Hat's board and will continue as director of the Red Hat Center for Open Source, a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting the principles of open-source software in a variety of industries.
Daly, meanwhile, will not have a position with the combined company and is leaving to "pursue other opportunities," a Red Hat spokeswoman said. For now, he is still at Cygnus' offices, helping with merger details.
Cygnus is a software-tools vendor that helped promote the open-source GNU operating environment.
