Some telecommunications (telecom) carriers now target a 20 percent power reduction per year on the equipment they deploy. This is a response to increasing power consumption in central offices, which is due to higher bandwidth capacities, increasing linecard port densities, more intelligent processing requirements, and more complex chip implementations.
