The growing number of electronic control units in new vehicles has increased the role of embedded security approaches in automotive designs. In the first installment of a two-part series, the author offers an analysis of ECU software integrity protection. The analysis also covers steps in the security process such as secure information logging and a strategy for preventing the use of non-original parts in automotive designs. Digital rights management issues are also considered.
