For an embedded designer, selecting the right file system requires a good balance between functionality and available resources. The type of file system structure available greatly influences the selection. For example, because digital cameras and PDAs are generally connected to a personal computer and the vast majority of PCs are running Windows, the file system structure of choice is one that supports FAT. Removable media are increasingly popular and file systems are now deployed on devices we would have believed impossible a few years ago. This paper explores some of the different file systems and file system structures available today.
