Mobile device designers face a critical question: what functionality should be incorporated into next-generation designs? Answering this question while simultaneously addressing the market needs of rapid development, lowest cost, and long battery life presents a major challenge. Unfortunately, conventional design approaches, including the use of Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and Application-Specific Standard Products (ASSPs), all tend to fall short in one or more areas.

This paper describes a new design alternative—the Customer Specific Standard Product (CSSP), which maximizes design options while minimizing cost and effort. A CSSP works as a companion device to the host processor and offers developers a unique combination of flexibility, integration, and silicon efficiency, while keeping power demands low.
