The next generation of cellular telephony provided by the evolution of existing digital systems (GPRS, EDGE, and HSCSD) or through the development of new ones (UMTS / IMT 2000) will offer the user greater flexibility and capability than ever before. This technical paper describes how Bluetooth, a new short range communications device, will open up a host of new applications that will extend the role of the mobile phone far beyond today's conventional phone service. In fact, it may be true to say that the commercial viability of the new developments is only likely to be realized if Bluetooth is successful in delivering the applications that will create the anticipated "datawave".
