Nowadays, System Engineers are placed in the center of two antagonist flows: microelectronic systems are increasingly complex whilst the time budget for development is constantly shrinking. Even if any "microelectronic system" comprises a more or less integrated mix of hardware and software, it is not obvious that there is a common answer to this new productivity challenge. Why is that? Because there are different types of systems and different types of system engineers.
