I-TDM is a PICMG standard optimized to transport and switch 64 Kbps low latency communications traffic over Voice LANs and Packet Backplanes. The main goal of the I-TDM protocol is to make a Private LAN or Packet Backplane look like a switching TDM bus (ie. H.110). I-TDM creates a robust bridge between existing telecom related devices such as Framers and DSPs to the next generation fabric backplanes. To the TDM device, the "virtual" TDM backplane still exists; the I-TDM shim device simply replaces the physical H.1x0 interface with a "virtual" one.
