In recent years the automotive industry has struggled to match the automotive device development cycle and requirements with the pace of change in the consumer electronics market. Consumers' desire to integrate consumer electronics (CE) technology seamlessly with their driving experience is leading to a convergence between CE technology and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) devices. While these platforms help differentiate one vehicle from another, consumers are unwilling to pay large premiums for IVI systems. This is a major problem because the costs to develop an IVI platform can easily exceed U.S. $70 million. As a result, OEMs are being pushed to reduce the development costs for new IVI devices even as they deliver ever more sophisticated devices.
