The last few years have seen dramatic improvements in how much computation and communication power can be packed into a device small enough to fit in your pocket. Also, the visual capabilities of these devices have improved: you can capture photographs and video, and, more importantly for graphics, the displays can show high quality color images at interactive rates.

While there have been significant advancements in both microprocessor management of battery consumption and performance and graphic capabilities, the desktop computer continues to lead the way in delivering the ultimate user multimedia experience. However, that may be changing in the coming years.
