The common electric meter has been around in its current mechanical form for about a century, recording power so that utilities can accurately bill their customers. The mechanical kilowatt-hour meter, built around a spinning metal disk, keeps track of actual energy usage without regard to the input voltage or power factor. This article presents an electric meter reference design built around the MAXQ3120 for the international electric meter market.
