This article provides a basic introduction of linear regulator (LR) and switching mode power supply (SMPS) to the system designers who do not have strong power supply design background. The contents cover: basic operating principles of LR and SMPS, the advantages and disadvantages of each solution, design considerations of a buck switching regulator, and general introduction of other non-isolated dc/dc converters.
