The J Consortium has recently approved as an ISO PAS submitter, making it possible for them to submit their "Real-Time Core Extensions" specification to ISO to become an international standard. The Real-Time Core Extensions are structured as a plug-in to augment the capabilities of existing off-the-shelf Java virtual machines. This report highlights key features of the J Consortium specification and introduces the principles upon which it is based.
