Fundamentals of Wireless

Fundamentals Course

May 2010

Launch
[Please note, this course may take up to one minute to launch in a new window. Please be patient.]

Many designers under appreciate the many issues associated with wirelessly enabling their designs, to the extent that delays of up to three or four months are commonplace. As the number of wirelessly enabled embedded starts to grow exponentially with the emergence of the smart grid and myriad portable devices and sensors, the number of engineers getting blindsided will grow proportionately.

It is with this in mind that we present the Fundamentals of Wireless, where Octoscope’s president Fanny Mlinarsky, a recognized expert it the field of wireless, will provide the information needed to get a wireless design of the ground -- on deadline.

Starting with the an overview of wireless interface options, both standard and proprietary, the course will cover terminology, FCC regulations and the unlicensed bands, will continue through the selection of a wireless interface and guidelines on antenna layout, and finish with practical, hands-on implementation example using a radio design from Silicon Labs.

It's harder to be more bandwidth-efficient than a slide show with audio commentary.

Maybe, considering your bandwidth limitations, Raman, you'd be better off requesting print materials.

Nice transition from Wireless stds to radio basics. Good presentation. What are you thought on LTE bands expecially hardware suppoting 20 MHz BW for accomodating more channel. lot of research is being done in LTE.

Thank you all for the positive feedback on the seminar. I appreciate receiving it and glad that the material is useful. Regarding channels and bandwidth, most LTE chipsets support 20 MHz today. The limitation is scarcity of contiguous 20 MHz chunks of licensed spectrum in many parts of the world. Also, power amplifier technology with instantaneous bandwidth of 20 MHz would have to gain momentum in volume pricing. It's not a technological challenge, but more an issue of market dynamics.

The material is very useful. If I could express a minor gripe; it would be better if the bullet-point on the slides were highlighted while the voice over elaborated the point. Also the wording and order of the summaries don't match the voice over, which is a bit distracting.

as just an outside observer and provider of machines necessary to build all the wireless devices mentioned in the presentation I think this is a great primer and I have it available to others.
Maybe there will be some a class about what a wireless device requires in terms of microelectronics etch and deposition steps, what kind of transistors and power requirements for devices/ what technology nodes?
Thanks anyway!

If Patrick would allow a small bit of self-promotion from the author... my consulting company, www.octoScope.com, can assist with wireless interface design and test.

Fanny, it is wonderful work and kudos to you for your efforts.

You should also consider writing a book on Proprietary Wireless Communication.

We may like to go into more details design implementation for proprietary wireless communication for industrial control.

This talk contains so much of information, UBM / EETimes should allow to download the full presentation for personal reference.
