Extend the range of low-power RF devices without exceeding FCC regulations

This article discusses ways to optimize the range of low-power wireless systems while complying with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations on devices classified as general purpose single-channel radios in the unlicensed ISM band (915 MHz or 2.4 GHz). For these devices, the output power of the fundamental frequency shall not exceed –1.25 dBm. It presents the basic considerations in calculating the expected range of wireless links and methods of improving the range. It also covers how to extend the system's range while keeping a focus on low-power and battery-powered applications.

Thank you for the article.
One thing I think needs to be added, is the effect of external filtering.
If there is no filter in front of the external LNA, you will run into IMD and Cross modulation issues.
And with filter you'll have to do the trade off between rejection and insertion loss to optimize Noise figure.
