In the second of a two-part series describing the emerging Autosar (Automotive Open System Architecture) automotive design standard, design optimization is the focus. Part One discussed Autosar's origins and architecture along with an analysis of its key features.

Part 2 continues the discussion of the design advantages of the Autosar standard. Optimization is said to be able to reduce the cost and weight of vehicle electrical distribution and control systems without sacrificing performance.

The author illustrates the optimization process with a proposed design for a distribution system that incorporates 20 electronic control units. Optimization allocates resources and weighs the consequences, repeating the operation until the best results are achieved, the author argues.
