Tremendous market acceptance of MOST technology within the automotive industry is driving OEMs and CEMs, developing and supplying multimedia and infotainment systems for cars, to explore new ways to increase manufacturing efficiency and reduce the associated production costs.

In 1998, when the MOST Cooperation was set up, the aim was to design and develop a common standard for the ever growing multimedia networking car entertainment and accessory system, a time when it was all too clear that the modest standalone radio was rapidly becoming outdated.

Comprising automotive manufacturers, Tier-1 automotive electrical suppliers and audio-video manufacturers, the industry standards body introduced the resultant MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) standard.

MOST is an efficient and cost-effective method of transmitting audio, video, data and control information between attached devices in the harsh environments of automotive applications.

At the same time, it provides the unique quality of service required for the transmission of audio and video services. Since the first MOST production car model was unveiled in 2001, 80 models have now implemented the MOST infotainment backbone.

And, according to the latest reports from the MOST Cooperation, besides Europe and the United States, MOST technology is already gaining widespread acceptance in Asia.

One of the integral building blocks of the MOST network is the MOST junction box; it is the interface connector between the electronics of the vehicle multimedia interface module, which contains the stereo, GPS, DVD, phone and portable media player controls, and the harness that connects the speakers and amplifiers.

Molex, one of the world’s leading suppliers of interconnect solutions and part of the MOST standard organisation, introduced its first MOST junction box in 2002.

With up to 42 circuits, the Molex MOST junction box allows automotive manufacturers to connect all their required multimedia devices using one connector and has already been integrated into production models on the road today.

Already, 5 major European car manufacturers integrate Molex MOST junction box products in various models.
